Every year on June 25th, World Vitiligo Day is observed to raise awareness about vitiligo—a skin condition that affects millions globally yet often remains misunderstood. Though it affects just over 1% of the world’s population, vitiligo can impact individuals of all ethnicities and genders. Beyond the physical symptoms, people with vitiligo often face significant social stigma and emotional challenges.
To shed light on some of these issues, World Vitiligo Day was first organized in 2011 by the VR Foundation (USA) and VITSAF (Nigeria). The date—June 25th—was chosen to honor the legacy of pop icon Michael Jackson, who himself lived with vitiligo. Over the years, the day has grown into a global movement, with ongoing efforts to have it officially recognized by the United Nations, aiming to ensure better healthcare, education, and support for those affected.
Fourteen years later, World Vitiligo Day 2025 is ready to:
-
Raise awareness to educate the public about vitiligo, including its causes, symptoms, and available treatments
-
Encourage acceptance to promote inclusivity and support for people with vitiligo
-
Support research initiatives to find improved treatments and enhance quality of life for those living with the condition
-
Provide a platform for individuals with vitiligo to connect, share experiences, and access support from advocacy groups and healthcare professionals
